Save Money on Household Items & Essentials

May 3, 2025

Have you ever thought about how much money you could save on household items and essentials just by making a few small changes? Whether you’re shopping for everyday basics or stocking up for the season, these tips can help stretch your dollars further. Let’s explore some smart ways to save!

1. Use Coupons to Cut Costs

Who doesn’t love a good coupon? Saving money on items you were going to buy anyway is a win for your wallet. The key is to search and organize your coupons before heading to the store, ideally while you’re making your shopping list.

Where to Find Coupons:

  • Retailer Websites, Apps, and Loyalty Programs: Most retailer websites list current deals and coupons, usually on the home page that can be used in-store or online. Some retailer’s offer coupons that can be used in addition to promotional sales prices. Coupons are not usually displayed at register or mentioned in the store. It’s good practice to always check. Many retailers have apps that provide digital coupons and some that are exclusive to app users that are not advertised in-store. Though it is not practical to have an app for every retailer, it could be beneficial to you to have the apps for the retailers you frequent to avoid losing out on savings.
  • Manufacturer and Brand coupons: Manufacturer coupons are specific to the product and can be used with retailers who sell the product. Many manufacturers such as Proctor & Gamble (P&G), have websites where you can obtain their coupons. Coupons can also be found on brand websites such as Pampers, Cera Ve, Huggies. Kleenex, Depends, Kotex, Scott, and tons more.
  • Browser Extension Coupon Finder: A browser extension can be added to your web browser, and it automatically searches and provide coupon codes when on retailer sites. Capital One has a browser extension called Capital One Shopping and PayPal has a browser extension called Honey that works on Safari. Take advantage of these free browser extensions to get auto-applied coupon codes and earn rewards.
  • Coupon Websites: Find coupons and great savings on coupon websites such as coupon.com, retailmenot.com, and Lozo.com to name a few.
  • Newspapers & mailers: Clip coupons from your local newspaper and from mailed ads from local businesses.

Pro Tip: Keep your coupons easily accessible to avoid hold-ups at checkout.

2. Shop at Discount Stores

Discount retailers offer great deals on everyday essentials that will save you money and allow you to stretch your budget. Department discount stores provide access to a wide variety of products at lower prices and can be a way to find unique or trendy items at more affordable prices such as clothing, shoes, home decor, appliances, dishes, candles, and much more from many popular national brands and private label products.

Discount grocery stores offer low prices on grocery essentials and household products. Many discount grocery stores have exclusive brand products and may only carry some popular brand products. Trying different brands can be challenging when you are familiar to certain products. The good thing is many discount grocery store retailers have websites with their products listed and you can research products and ingredients before going to the store. You do not have to sacrifice quality or nutritional values to save money on food.

3. Buy in Bulk to Save Long-Term

Buying in bulk is a great way to save money on household essentials because it’s something that you frequently need and replenish. By taking advantage of lower cost per unit, you will save money over time. When making the change to buying items in bulk you will notice the price of good is more expensive because you are getting more product.

For example, let’s say you buy trash bags at your local dollar store at $5.95 for 17 bags which comes out to about $0.35 a bag and you replenish trash bags every 2 weeks. You now decide to purchase trash bags in bulk at $18.98 for 90 bags which comes out to $0.21 a bag and lasts 10 weeks. While this may seem challenging, you can overcome it by rearranging your budget. Remember you were going to spend this money anyway in fact more money when replenishing the item, so it’s already in your budget. You will later reap the benefit of more savings by replenishing your items less frequently.

Where to Shop in Bulk:

  • Sam’s Club
  • Costco

Both stores require memberships. Deals are often available on Groupon to help you save even more on sign-up fees. Also, you may qualify for a discount on membership through the store. Check out the store websites for qualification criteria.

4. Compare Prices Before You Buy

One of the benefits of the era of online shopping is that most retailers have an online store front and consumers can save time and money by comparing prices online before going out to the store. Price comparison is ideal when you are look for something specific. For example, imagine your home printer just ran out of ink. Who has the best price on printer ink right now? And who has it available for pick up today? Many retailers will price match identical items from competitors. Price, availability, and convenience are major factors in how we spend money. Checking these things online allows us, as consumers, to weigh our options.  Before making a purchase, especially a specific item, do a quick price comparison online. Most major retailers list their stock and prices online, allowing you to:

  • Find the lowest price
  • Check availability
  • Request a price match at certain stores

This ensures you don’t overpay when there is opportunity to save money and can often lead to a faster, more efficient shopping experience.
